I read this in todays newspaper about Guru Tegh bahadur, ninth guru of Sikhs.
When Aurangazeb was persecuting Hindus and forcibly converting them to Islam, Guru Tegh bahadur offered his life along with his disciples to the tyranny of aurangzeb.
Aurangzeb was a religious zealot, who started his forcible conversion of Kashmiri pandits. They went to meet Guru Tegh bahadur for protection. Tegh bahadur then asked them to go tell Aurangzeb that if he can convert Tegh bahadur, then they will also convert. Aurangzeb arrested and brought the Guru along with his disciples to Delhi and told him to convert to Islam or face death. Guru refused to convert, and all his disciples were killed in front of him, and he was asked to perform miracles. Guru Tegh bahadur refused to perform miracles, and also suffered the killings of his disciples with perfect equanimity. Aurangzeb, having failed to convert him, then ordered his soldiers to behead the Guru, which they did.
Nov-24th is the birthday of Guru Tegh bahadur who faced his death smilingly. He is known as 'Shield of Hinduism'.
