I learnt the importance of sense control today. My son is my teacher. We discussed various angles regarding discipline and sense control.
What is the problem of sense pleasures ?
They give immediate sense gratification. They are short term. They may harm in the long run. Example is, one may have sweets, they are tasty in the short run, but may lead to diabetes in the long run.
Everybody know the importance of dieting, exercise etc. But very few are successful in implementing it.
Why large percentage of people are not able to follow good diet and exercise ? Why are they struggling with over weight and obesity and lifestyle diseases ?
Because , they prioritise short term sense gratification over long term gain. That's why.
When a sense pleasure is enjoyed, a chemical called dopomine is released in the body. This gives a pleasant feeling. This is temporary in nature. So, people are addicted are to this temporary gratification, and fail to see the long term implications. They keep going back to these temporary enjoyments.
The people who are successful in implementing good diet restrictions and regular exercise are the ones who give priority of a good health over temporary sense pleasures.
