Gurugita chapter-1 sloka 31-38
Sri Sadgurubhyoh Namah
31. Svaashrmam cha svajaatim cha svakirthi pushtivardhanam |
Etat sarvam parityajya Gurumeva samashrayet ||
Meaning : Think always of Guru abandoning one's stage of life, caste, materialistic progress.

32. Guru vaktre stitha vidya Guru bhaktya cha labhyate |
trailokye sphuta vaktaro devarshi pitr manavaha ||
Meaning : By the devotion towards Guru, one gets wisdom of Self  through the teachings of guru. This fact is well established in three worlds, as enunciated by Devarshis, ancestors and wise beings.

33. Gukarashcha andhakaro hi rukarasteja uchyate |
Ajnana grasakam brahma gurureva na samshayah ||
Meaning : The syllable 'Gu' means darkness, syllable 'Ru' means light. Remover of darkness of ignorance, and illuminator of supreme knowledge is Guru who is brahma.

34. Gukarascha andhakarastu Rukarastannirodhakrit |
andhakara vinashitvat Gururityabhideeyate ||
Meaning : Syllable 'Gu' means darkness, syllable 'Ru' means remover of darkness. Guru is one who removes the darkness.

35. Gukarascha gunaatito rupatito rukarakaha |
Gunarupa vihinatvat Gururityabhideeyate ||
Meaning: Syllable 'Gu' means on above three gunas (qualities of good=satva, bad=rajas, ugly=tamo), and syllable 'Ru' means above forms. One who is beyond all gunas and all forms, he is known as Guru.

36. Gukarah prathamo varno maayadi gunabhasakah |
Rukaarosti param brahma mayabhranti vimochakam ||
Meaning : Syllable 'Gu' means the binding force 'maya', and syllable 'Ru' means dispeller of maya and all illusions, hence known as Guru.
