Gurugita chapter-1 sloka 22-24
Sri Sadgurubhyoh Namah
22. Guru buddhyaatmano na anyat satyam satyam varaanane |
tallabhaartham prayatnastu kartavyashcha maneeshibhihi ||
Meaning : Guru is not other than conscious Self.This is the Truth. The purpose of life for all men is to seek to attain that. One of the mahavakyas of vedanta is 'Prajnanam brahma', meaning 'consciousness is Brahman'. The consciousness-awareness in every being is the Guru also known as Brahman.

23. Guudhaavidya jaganmaaya dehaschaajnaanasambhavaha |
vijnaanam yat prasadena Guru shabdena kathyate ||
Meaning : Hidden ignorance (Ignorance of Self), illusion that the world is, body-consciousness (thinking that I am the body), all arise out of the Ajnana (Ignorance). By whose grace one understands ignorance and transcends that and attains direct self-knowledge is known as Guru.

24. Dehi brahma bhavedyasmaat tvat kripaartham vadaami tat |
sarva paapa vishuddhaatma Sri Guro paada  sevanat ||
Meaning : I shall tell you out of compassion, how an ignorant embodied soul gets purified of all sins, and becomes one with Brahman. It is by serving the feet of Guru.
Viveka and Vairagya are the two feet of Guru. Serving the feet of Guru means to practice these two.
Viveka means discrimination of what is permanent and what is impermanent.
Vairagya means dispassion towards impermanent and passion towards permanent.
