Greatest Virtue -- Violence or Non-violence

What is the greatest virtue of all ?
"Ahimsa Paramo dharmaha, Dharma himsa tathaiva cha"
Meaning : Righteous non-violence is greatest virtue, so is righteous violence.
Remember that Lord Krishna inspired Arjuna to fight. When weak get trampled, one cannot sit idle and say they are practicing non-violence.
usually a Brahmana has to practice Ahimsa, and a Kshatriya has to practice righteous violence. Both are doing their ordained duty and hence accrue equal merit.
Idam brahmyam, Idam kshatryam : When Kshatriya does not protect the people, it is the duty of a brahmana to take up arms and resort to righteous violence. Lord Parasurama, who is a brahmana, used his axe to conquer the world 21 times and shed the blood of erring kings. Parasurama then propitiated his forefathers giving the ablutions with blood rather than water. That place is a sacred place called Kurukshetra.
Recent example is that of Hoysala kings in Karnataka , and Peshwas in Maharashtra. They are brahmins who took up arms to protect the Hindu dharma.
