Quoting SriRaman Maharshi
Ordinary Guru asks you to do all kinds of techniques and practices. The sadhaka mind is already agitated, and frustrated before coming to him. After coming to an ordinary Guru, Sadhaka is even more confused as to his previous practices, and future practices. What Sadhaka needs is rest of mind. Know that if your Guru asks you to do this and that , He is Yama disguised.
Sadguru will not show any path or ask you to do any practice. Sadguru will simply ask the sadhaka to take rest of mind. That is the end of spiritual practices.
Hence in who's presence your mind finds rest and peace, that person is your sadguru.
"Na Guror Adhikam, Na Guror Adhikam", There is nobody higher than Guru.
